How to Clean a Squirrel for Eating
- Place the squirrel on the ground, belly up (should already be dead).
- Pull the end of the squirrel’s tail up slightly toward you with strong force.
- Cut into the squirrel with a sharp knife (the sharper the better).
- Make the incision across the base of the tail, where it meets the body. (Caution-Do not cut the tail completely off-you will need it for step 8).
- Split the hide. Hit it a hard lick!
- Make an incision through the hide down the inside of one hind leg so it connects to the cut at the tail.
- Repeat for the other hind leg.
- Place your foot on the squirrel’s tail (the reason you needed to leave some).
- Pull up sharply on the squirrel’s hind legs as hard as you can (one swift motion is best).
- Peel the skin off from the bottom of the squirrel to the head.
- Discard the squirrel’s skin in a safe container.
- Cut the squirrel’s head off at the neck.
- Cut the squirrel’s feet off.
- Slice the belly from stem to stern and remove all entrails.
- Discard entrails then rinse off excess blood with clean water (cool water works best).
- Cook the squirrel (salt to taste).
Worth noting–Squirrels have tough skin that is difficult to remove, so it will take time and a lot of practice. Squirrels are good to eat though and are well worth the effort.
