Decorate Safely

Since the holidays are approaching I wanted to share some basic safety tips with you so your party does not get you injured or killed. When planning your holiday decorating at any facility, please remember these policy guidelines:

1. Decorations must be of flameproof or flame-resistant materials or be sprayed with a flame-retardant chemical. Please note: when using the flame retardant chemical use EXTREME caution as the chemical is highly flammable while wet and can explode while being applied. If the chemical is sprayed into your eyes you surely will be blinded on contact.

2. Decorations may not be hung from sprinkler heads or placed so as to interfere with their effectiveness. If a decorated cup is placed over a sprinkler head you will need to drill 3-7 holes in the cup to allow proper water dispersion. You will also need to use only cups that are made of heat-conducting material. It is prohibited to use cups that are made of aluminum.

3. No electrical lighting or other electrical decorations. Battery-operated lighting is acceptable if the batteries are properly charged and meet the battery requirements listed in your new employee orientation packet. If you use rechargeable batteries, make sure you do not charge batteries of one brand using another brand’s charger. This is prohibited since it will cause the batteries to overheat and explode.

4. Only artificial trees or greenery are allowed. Real plants and trees are considered to be too flammable and require too much maintenance. If real trees and/or greenery is spotted, they must be destroyed immediately.

5. Decorations must be located so as not to obstruct exits, stairwells, fire extinguishers, or automatic doors. Elevators and manual (non automatic) doors however can be blocked with decorations.

6. Open flame items are prohibited (candles, lanterns, torches, flares, bottles of gasoline, molotov cocktails, firebombs, flamethrowers, etc.). These items are extremely flammable even if they are not intentionally lit. Please note: NEVER spray the flame retardant chemical on these items as they will likely ignite causing serious harm.

Please have a great time decorating your area and as always……have a safe holiday.
